Picture of Jean-Luc Bédard

Initially trained as an anthropologist, my Ph.D. thesis (U. Laval, 2005) examined social memory and identity among migrating families. In parallel, I developed an expertise on research in workplaces, looking at transmission of knowledge and training. This led me to look further into highly skiiled workers, experience and expertise sharing in the context of aging and retirement.

My recent research projects concentrate on foreign-trained professionals (FTPs) and their entry into Canadian and Quebec workforce, especially those entering practice of a regulated profession. These research objectives look at how immigrants integrate into their new country's workplace, through their admission by the profession's regulator, but also their further training needed to enter Canadian workforce, as well as their success when entering the local job market. This has led me to study entry into practice of foreign-trained professionals, to look at regulated professions' actors (regulators, training establishments, employers, professional associations, etc.), and skills evaluation processes, in Quebec as well as in other Canadian provinces.
