Objectives
To acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge required to develop a risk management policy. To learn about risk hedging instruments, particularly as regards exchange and interest rate risks. Application to international investments.
Contents
Financial risk management concepts. Management of business risks, political risks, interest rate risks and exchange risks. Characteristics and use of derivative financial instruments: forward and future contracts, options, swaps. Application to international investment analysis.
Course materials
The course material includes a CD-ROM, a course package and the textbook Managing Financial Risk: A Guide to Derivative Products, Financial Engineering, and Value Maximization by Charles W. Smithson (1998, 3rd edition, 620 pages). The study guide and course package are available on the program Website.
Technological information
The course requires access to the Internet and the use of spreadsheet software. It includes a CD-ROM.
Minimum configuration requirements to take this course: PC with Windows 98 (or higher operating system); Software suite, including word processing; spreadsheet and presentation software; Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher version); Email address; Printer and loudspeakers, if necessary.

Evaluation
Grading is based on three case studies (30%, 35% and 35%).
